About the album

When Alexandre Dratwicki, Scientific Director of Palazzetto Bru Zane - Centre de musique romantique française - told us about Louis Théodore Gouvy, the name was completely new to us. Balancing our interpretations of the Great Composers with the discovery and evaluation of lesser known composers has always been one of our main objectives and, with this in mind, we have already dedicated a lot of time to Hummel. He at least was a known composer amongst the first Romantic Virtuosi, whereas investigating Gouvy was just a vague idea, but one that turned out to be extremely stimulating. As soon as we started analysing his music, we realised that it was yet another example of an important composer that has unjustly been ignored. The fact that he was born in an area that historically has frequently changed hands between France and Germany (he only became a French citizen at the age of 32) partly explains his struggle to fame, but it enabled him to develop a unique style. He mixed the solidity, potency and richness of the Romantic German Structure with the unusual inventiveness, the bubbly curiosity and cosmopolitan variety of French Music and Culture of the second half of the 19th century, all combined with a romantic instrumental virtuosity and the irresistible and unquenchable passion for the world of opera. He captivated us in particular with his thematic inventions, his superb knowledge of harmony and instrumental composition, but also his ingenuous way of dealing with new musical approaches. Out of the 5 trios that Gouvy has written, we have chosen nos. 2, 3 and 4.

Voces Intimae records for Challenge Classics. The first release was the premiere worldwide recording on period instruments of the Robert Schumann Piano Trios op. 63 & 110. It was awarded as “Period Instrument Choice” by BBC-Radio 3 and “CD of the Month” by Suonare News. The trio’s previous recording of the complete edition of the trios of J.N. Hummel on Warner Classics, again on period instruments, was awarded “Critics CD of the Year 2006” and “CD of the Week” by BBC Radio 3’s CD Review, “Choice of the Month” by BBC Music Magazine and “Cdécisif” by the Radio Suisse Romande. Voces Intimae has also recorded the trios of Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn Bartoldy, as well as a selection of a rare repertoire of 19th century Fantasias based on the operas of Vincenzo Bellini, all on period instruments.
The aim of the trio is to restore the music to the purity of its original form, and to realise the true intentions of the composer in their production of tone and phrasing. Thus, they hope to bring the authentic historical context back to life in their performance of the music. The name Voces Intimae was chosen to convey the trio’s sensitivity to the subtleties of the repertoire, preferring, for instance, to highlight the delicate suggestion of a horse’s trotting gait in the rhythm of a passage of music, rather than thoughtlessly articulating it in a manner recalling the sound of a round of artillery. In this way, the group allows the subtle complexities, the delicate and ever-shifting shades of colour, and the streaks of melancholy running through the music to shine through, all aspects which were often neglected during the 20th century.

Louis Théodore Gouvy

Louis Théodore Gouvy was born into a French-speaking family in the village of Goffontaine, in the Sarre, a region on the France-Prussia border (now Saarbrücken-Schafbrücke, Germany). Because this region fell under Prussian control shortly before his birth, Théodore Gouvy could not attain French citizenship until the age of 32. He began piano lessons with a private tutor at the age of eight, and was educated in France—Sarreguemines, then Metz—developing a keen interest in Classical Greek culture and in modern languages—not only German, which he spoke fluently, but English and Italian as well. In 1837 he went to Paris to study law, continuing his piano lessons with a pupil of the pianist and composer Henri Herz (1803–1888) and became friendly with...

In 1837 he went to Paris to study law, continuing his piano lessons with a pupil of the pianist and composer Henri Herz (1803–1888) and became friendly with Adolphe Adam. This led to further music studies in Paris and Berlin. Unable to pursue music instruction at the Conservatoire de Paris, he took up private courses.
Gouvy was a man of two cultures, divided between France and Germany, from which he drew his inspiration, his characteristics and his force. While to a certain extent he was known and recognized in his lifetime, he fell into obscurity following his death. Gouvy, drawn toward pure instrumental music as opposed to opera, set himself the unenviable task of becoming a French symphonist. It was unenviable because the French, and especially the Parisians, throughout most of the 19th century were opera-mad and not particularly interested in pure instrumental music. It was this disdain for instrumental music in general which led to Gouvy living the last third of his life almost entirely in Germany where he was much appreciated.
During his lifetime, his compositions, and especially his chamber music, were held in high regard and often performed in those countries (Germany, Austria, England, Scandinavia, and Russia) where chamber music mattered. But in France, he never achieved real acclaim. Gouvy was universally acknowledged for being a master of form and for his deft sense of instrumental timbre. Mendelssohn and Schumann were his models and his music developed along the lines one might have expected of those men had they lived longer. Virtually all of his works show that he was a gifted melodist whose music is a joy to hear.
Musicians of the first rank such as Johannes Brahms, Carl Reinecke, and Joseph Joachim, who were familiar with Gouvy's music, held it in high regard.
Hector Berlioz wrote in the Journal des Débats of April 13, 1851: "That a musician of the importance of M. Gouvy is still not very well known in Paris, and that so many gnats bother the public with their tenacious buzzing, it is enough to confuse and inflame the naive spirits that still believe in the reason and the justice of our musical manners".
Berlioz's favourable reviews had little effect, and Gouvy's music continued to be neglected until the end of the 20th century. In 1994, his Requiem, with its vigorous Dies iræ, was revived by the Lorraine Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jacques Houtmann (who recorded a CD of the work, which appeared the K617 label). Stylistically the composition owes something to Mendelssohn, something to Gounod, and something to Verdi, but remains quietly original despite these influences.
Although his work comprises more than two hundred compositions, including 90 opuses published in his lifetime, it largely remains ignored. In particular, he wrote twenty-four compositions for a full orchestra, including nine symphonies, as well as overtures and variations. Chamber music comprises a large portion of Gouvy's work and accounts in particular for four sonatas in duet form, five trios, eleven quartets, seven quintets, an enormous piano repertoire — for two and four hands — and for two pianos, several scores for wind instrument ensembles, as well as many melodies and Lieder. We also know of five great dramatic cantatas (Aslega, Œdipe à Colone, Iphigénie en Tauride, Électre, and Polyxène), two operas (Le Cid and Mateo Falcone) as well as some large religious works, including a Requiem, a Stabat Mater, a Messe brève, and the cantata Golgotha.
Gouvy was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1894 on the death of Anton Rubinstein, and to the König-Preussische Akademie in Berlin in 1895. He died in Leipzig on 21 April 1898.
A list of his works was compiled by François-Joseph Fétis and Arthur Pougin.

BBC Music Magazine, 01-7-2013

It is the quality of execution that gives the most pleasure. The virtuoso piano part by Riccardo Ceccetti interpreted on a beautifully restored Pleyel, is ideally balanced with the violin (Luigi de Filippi) and cello (Sandro Meo).
Luister Magazine, 01-6-2013

Such a sparkling recording and performances with as much commitment as these.

Why buy this record? To hear how the Romatic sounded when it was fresh; your listening does not get colored by recognition
Knack, 08-4-2013

Why buy this record? To hear how romance sounded when it was still fresh ... and because Vces Intimae is the worlds best piano trio.
Knack, 01-3-2013

Gouvy's compositions have both: the graveness and pondering of Brahms and the french charm and elegance. Voces intimae find their own personal way to that wonderful intersection. They perform Gouvy with a high level of virtuosity, with admirabel cantilena, deep passion, pastoral idyll.
Pizzicato

Voces Intimae devote to that music on a high level. In the center of the musical interpretation and of the recording is the piano, a Pleyel made in 1848, which mellow and nevertheless present sound is excellent balanced.
concerto

Voces Intimae proceed on the one hand crystal-clear and analytic, on the other hand equally precise, sensitive and beautiful sounding.
